Smart Meters pose a menace to society: they spy on you and burn your brain cells. Beware, they might even help you save money! JK

What is a smart meter? A Smart Meter is the next generation of a gas and electricity meter. They’re being installed by energy suppliers in every home worldwide: USA, UK, France, etc. Smart meters come with an in-home display screen that shows you exactly how much energy you’re using in pounds and pence, in near real time and will bring an end to estimated bills.

Smart Meters Pros:

  • Utility workers can read the meters from a distance or from the electrical network. This benefits the company as less agents are needed and the data get close to be real time for the overall network.
  • Utility workers don’t need to physically enter your home once a year anymore, to read the meter. Getting the readings when people do not open or are constantly absent lead to over /under billing estimates. Wireless readings benefit both the companies and the end users.
  • You now pay for exactly what you consume and can track easily the monthly consumption, and detect failing devices when consumption gets abnormally high. Goodbye to complicated meter readings: it sends the reading to your energy supplier at least once a month, so you will receive accurate, not estimated, bills.
  • You avoid to pay a fee when you refuse (opt-out) its installation. Example in Maryland: BG&E charges you $75 + $5/mo!

Smart Meters Cons:

  • Less utility workers are needed to do the meter reading job, therefore it’s a direct loss in jobs. That’s the only legitimate downside I could imagine.

Now, prepare to be amazed.

Smart Meters Menace

Resistance to change leads to nonsensical and unproven fears1 (cancer.org) such as people declaring themselves electromagnetically sensitive and accusing the smart meters to be harmful! In the same vein as the flat earthism, nonprofits warning about the fictitious dangers of smart meters have flourished everywhere:

  • smartmeterdangers.org spreads false and unverified information. The list of “significant smart meter health risks at 1 to 6 feet” include:

You know what i’m sayin homie DUH!!!

  • michiganstopsmartmeters.com proudly declare that “Wireless or Not, Smart Meters Harm Your Health”:
    • Radio frequency sickness results from overexposure to radio frequency radiation. Radio frequency sickness is not a disease. It is an environmentally induced functional impairment (source site cannot be reached).
    • The SMPS function emits sharp spikes of millisecond bursts constantly, (…) also is causing havoc with biological systems (plants, animals and humans) in its field of exposure
    • Smart meters emit more radiation than phones, it’s just constantly on and you can’t turn it off2 (nytimes.com). Says a woman that constantly sticks a powerful, Bluetooth enabled device against her brain.

  • emfsafetynetwork.org help you learn about the science:
    • The National Toxicology Program found a statistically significant increase in brain cancers from exposure to cell phone frequencies (source site cannot be reached)
    • In 2015, 220 scientists published in peer-reviewed journals warning against cell phones, infrastructure, Wi-Fi, ‘smart’ meter/grid technology and baby monitors to make an appeal upon the United Nations (source is www.emfscientist.org, site run by the same individuals). Pseudo scientists cited are unreferenced.
    • They cite the controversial press release n.208 from the World Health Organization about radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans3 (iarc.fr). When you read the Results section, it’s a blatant failure: “evidence was reviewed critically, and overall evaluated as being limited”, and “inadequate to draw conclusions for other types of cancers”.

The worst is yet to come

On February 21, 2013, the city council of Sebastopol, California (a small suburb north of San Francisco) adopted a resolution attempting to ban the installation of smart meters, claiming that the devices pose “potential risks to the health, safety and welfare of Sebastopol residents.”4 (huffingtonpost.com).

This problem is serious and must be addressed because it also affects our decision makers. Just because we elected them, doesn’t make them exempt of the usual flaws and biases we all suffer from.
